Police close road after scaffold collapse

MAIN road in Birkenhead was closed to commuters this evening after a set of scaffolding collapsed.

Police were called shortly before 3.45pm after a driver reported seeing the platforms hanging from the side of buildings in Cleveland Street.

Part of the buildings, which are in the process of being demolished, had also fallen onto the road.

Officers immediately closed the road off at its junction with Duke Street, meaning diversions for drivers.

Workers from Wirral Council were on the scene helping to secure the scaffolding.

No one was injured in the incident although one car was towed away for safety reasons.

Police were advising drivers to find an alternative route.
